Brewing Basics

What You’ll Need

When it’s time to brew great coffee, you will universally need the following:

  • A scale that measures in grams
  • A kettle to heat water
  • A brewer (coffee machine, cone, french press, etc.) and filter
  • A grinder
  • Filtered water
  • Coffee!
  • A recipe

Your Recipe, Your Ratio

Your recipe is the ratio of coffee to water you use, your grind setting, your water temperature, and your brew time.

At Broadsheet, we like to use a ratio of 1 part coffee to 16.5 parts water for our pour overs, or 1:16.5. With this ratio, we can easily scale up or down a recipe to match your desired serving size. So if you’d like an 8 oz cup of coffee, or approximately 240 grams, you can use 17 grams of coffee to 280 grams of water total (to account for some of the water which will hydrate the ground coffee and be retained within the grounds).
