French Press
French Press
Ratio: 1:15
Time: 4-5 minutes
Temperature: 205-210°F
Additional Equipment:
- Two spoons
- Timer
- Determine your batch size. Some French presses can hold a liter, some can only hold 8 oz. For this guide, we’ll be using 600 grams.
- Heat water in your kettle or teapot. Preheat the French press with hot water.
- Grind measured coffee (ie 40 grams) on a medium setting (like sea salt).
- Dispose of the preheat water in the French press and add the ground coffee. Place the press on the scale and tare. Set the timer for 4 minutes.
- When you start to pour the hot water, start the timer. Pour all of the water in a steady stream for no more than 30 seconds. Gently stir the brew three times in a circular motion and place the cap on the French press. DO NOT PRESS DOWN.
- When the timer finishes, gently stir the crust that has formed. Skim the foam and stray grounds from the top of the coffee and discard. Carefully replace the lid, wait 30 seconds, then gently press the plunger until you feel slight resistance.
- Decant the brew immediately. Do not let it sit or the coffee will overextract and taste bitter.
